Meet The Challenge Host, Amber Thiel

"I started my clean eating journey almost thirteen years ago. Although my "before" picture shows me smiling and some may not consider me "overweight", I was bloated, exhausted, depressed, anxious - and I hated my body. (BTW, this is not my baby in the picture, it's my nephew). Despite my best efforts to follow a system or diet, I always ended up reverting back to old comfortable habits and self-sabotaging my results. I realized I was never going to be fixed by a diet, because my issues were deeper than the food I was using to cope, check-out and be in control.

You can read my credentials below. I had the knowledge and training necessary to know what to do to get results, but my obsession with achieving the perfect body and finding a short-cut kept me in bondage to the scale, calorie counting, laxative abuse, eating disorders, excessive exercise and the next fad diet. I lived in a selfish haze - consumed with how I looked, what I was going to eat (or not eat) and when I was going to fit in my next workout. I have realized since that unresolved grief around the loss of my young mom to breast cancer when I was 23 as well as many rejection experiences throughout my life were the underlying reasons for my shattered self-worth, misplaced identity and fear. Somewhere along the way, I made a subconscious decision that something was wrong with me, so I needed to be a different version of myself - a perfect version. Getting close to people and allowing them to see the "real mess I was" meant they would reject me and ultimately leave me. 

Living in this hell, I had very little time or energy to focus on what God had purposed for my life. Slowly I began to feel more and more hopeless and joyless. I eventually found my personal rock bottom - binging and purging daily, abusing laxatives daily, excessively exercising, obsessively counting calories, living on coffee and diet soda all day, depending on an antidepressant and living alone with my 2 cats. I had insomnia, my hair was falling out, I pooped once a week, my skin was unhealthy and even though I had people around me every day at work and friends to hang out with on the weekends - I was utterly alone. I was a mess.

When I hit bottom, I looked up. I surrendered. I couldn't do it in my own strength and I couldn't do it the way the world told me to do it. I listened to my heart and the wisdom that already lived inside of me. I stopped dieting. I applied the education I had been gifted with and started eating to love and nourish myself rather than to achieve some external number. I drank a lot of clean water, gave up the diet sodas and released some other unhealthy habits and thought patterns.

It's impossible for me to not share that my journey was led and fueled by my relationships with my friend, Lord and healer - Jesus. Although this challenge is not a Christian challenge (although I do have one of these too) - it is an opportunity for you to look beyond to food to WHY you use food the way you do. I have enjoyed some deep healing of emotional wounds from my past that I had consistently numbed with unhealthy food, toxic relationships and alcohol habits. In these areas of weakness, I found renewed strength. I made a decision to no longer partner with the fear of being out of control and relinquished control to the Lord. It wasn't easy, it wasn't tear free, it wasn't perfect either - but it has been worth every single second. I am transformed and you can be too.

I live today as a free woman. Although I am 25 pounds thinner and have never physically looked or felt better in my life - more importantly I don't live obsessed or fearful or lost. I live with purpose and hope. Over four years ago, God gave me the greatest blessing - my daughter, Berlyn, who will only know a mom who is as healthy on the inside as she is on the outside. Praise God for the version of me that He had always intended has been revealed! How many mom's reading this want to be the best version of themselves? I believe it is more than possible - it is inevitable if you just take the first step of faith - and then the next and so forth. 

As CEO and creator of The Healthy Edge, my purpose is to set women free, just like I was set free. Overcoming the battle and breaking the strongholds surrounding your weight, energy and health issues frees up the energy to live out your purpose and love people more. That's exactly why I began The Healthy Edge movement - to empower women to be confident leaders in their own health and their family's health so they can live the abundant life God uniquely created for them to have and enjoy.

Clean eating doesn't have to be confusing or complicated. If you have felt that healthy living has too many "rules", then I am going to challenge you that you haven't been listening to the right sources. God made real food for us to love and flourish with. It comes from the earth and is nourished by nature. It's minimally processed and it provides nutrition - not just calories to our amazing bodies. Watch this video for even more insight.

I will be sharing over 40 delicious, whole food recipes from The Healthy Edge lifestyle program. Healthy should NEVER be boring and you should never force yourself to eat things just because it's healthy. This strategy is a sure-fire way to rebel or quit! I will also share sweet decadent treat recipes too such as this Peanut Butter & Banana muffins that take less than 10 minutes to make and 8 minutes to bake. And don't worry if you don't do peanut butter or bananas - you can substitute sunflower seed butter and pumpkin!

Perfection is not only impossible, it is the number one reason people quit. During this challenge, you will choose whole foods 80% of the time including fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, lean meats, eggs, and whole grains. You can even enjoy things like PIZZA! Just wait until you get the Cauliflower Pizza Crust recipe (see pic) - it's amazing. Have some food allergies? Well, I am Celiac, so all of my recipes are gluten-free and most are dairy-free as well. Simply focus on the whole foods you CAN eat! You will be receiving a breakfast and snack guide, 5 day meal plans, recipes and a food prep workshop! Oh, and I always offer free health coaching sessions if you need some support customizing this challenge to your specific needs!

This begins with a healthy, whole food and balanced breakfast. This habit will maximize your metabolism (that some of you have turned-off due to dieting or neglect) and keep you out of the CRAZY CRAVING zone that leads you to self-sabotage. Don't worry, I have provided plenty of support in your prep days (there are four of them) to get you ready for this part of the challenge that will fit any food preference. Yes, you see a picture with BREAD in it. Take the challenge to learn how this is possible!

Water & Decaf Tea Only
Get ready to feel rejuvenated and energized through proper hydration. Choose to give your body a break from alcohol, soda, energy drinks, coffee and fruit juices. If you drink very little water now, you are going to want to slowly increase your intake every day throughout the challenge with the goal of 60+ ounces a day or half of your body weight (minimum)! If you are a coffee ADDICT, have no fear. This is YOUR CHALLENGE and cutting down on caffeine (which is suggested instead of cold turkey) will serve your body well.

This is one of the best bonuses of the challenge. You will receive access to one of my awesome food prep workshops to prep alongside me from the comfort of your own kitchen. Over the last two weeks, i have really been practicing taking control and making conscious decisions about the food I put in my body. "Hello Everyone! I want to share my experience on this challenge. First of all, I love that it’s called a “challenge” and not a detox or cleanse even though I know it definitely has those properties. This has been such a great experience for me and different from my previous cleanses and detoxes. The biggest difference for me is NOT feeling that I’m on a cleanse, detox, diet, etc. I honestly don’t have the feeling like- “yay! it’s the last day, I can drink or have things I’ve been restricting again.” I just feel like I want to continue on the journey I’ve started and maintain the things I’ve been focused on doing the past 10 days because I feel so much better. I truly believe that not having a list of restricted foods is freeing and one of the main reasons I don’t feel happy it’s over. "THE SCALE - Is an Inanimate object used to measure your weight so why do we use it to measure success or to validate the hard work we have done? Well it happened to me this morning! The past two weeks I have been making process daily with the choices I have made with the intentions of fueling my body with healthy food choices and today I felt the urge to step on the scale to validate my hard work... WHY 🤔 it’s just a number that no one else sees but me. So the good news is that yes the number went down. Lesson for me don’t look to others or a scale for validation. I was already proud of myself without even seeing the number on a scale. Progress not perfection. I will not allow an inanimate to define my success. Here’s to continuing the journey and making intentional choices that support a healthy body, mind and spirit ❤️✨"

"Since I started this journey I have been finding new recipes to make, trying new foods and drinks, making healthier choices and reading all ingredients on packages and buying the best.  I have actually been doing this eat clean for 11 days now I started before this challenge begin.

"When I told my son about the challenge and that I haven’t had coffee for almost 10 days he couldn’t believe it! I have always been a big coffee ☕️ drinker. I am feeling a lot better without it though. Weird that I always thought that I couldn’t get my day started without coffee and that I needed it to wake up in the mornings. Through this challenge I have found my love for tea again and really enjoy some of the loose leaf tea options."
"Last night I slept for 5 hours without waking up. I cannot tell you the last time I have had that much sleep at one time. My usual is waking up every one to two hours. Thank you Amber Thiel!! I committed to less caffeine and alcohol this challenge which I had not done in prior challenges. 
Instead of coffee first thing I had some Yogi Detox Tea. Later after breakfast I would have a half cup or 2 of coffee. I only had 1 glass of wine during the challenge.
I had noticed I was sleeping for longer periods of time earlier this week, which was great. But my AH HA moment was at 2:45 am this morning. It was amazing. Needless to say this is a new habit I will keep working on as time passes. Thank you for this challenge!"
